We bought the MUM car for Sandra's birthday 10 years ago and it has proved to be mainly reliable and comfortable. Perhaps our weather could have suited it better. There's a bit of mildew on the hood and I still resent the treatment from Audi when the clutch went at 25000 miles - two minutes out of warranty.
With her birthday approaching again I have been thinking about her motoring costs
Here is the arithmetic for its 11th year
Depreciation £500? ( it was written down to nothing in 2008 but may still be worth £3000)
Insurance - £300
Service - £300
Fuel - £2000 based on 25mpg and 8000 miles
Road tax £460
Total cost £3560 - 44.5p per mile
Or would it be more sensible to buy a new one where the figures might look like this...
Depreciation £5000 (20% of £25000)
Insurance - £300
Service - £100
Fuel - £1250 based on 40mpg and 8000 miles
Road tax £105
Total cost £6755 - 84.4p per mile
Oh dear I forgot the cost of finance for a new one - That could be another 15p per mile.
I think we'll probably keep MUM going for another year.
