Culture

To demonstrate we're not in a cultural desert we went to the opera last night.

Birmingham Hippodrome and a 7.00 pm start - then  3 hours 25 minutes with a full house for a performance by the Welsh National Opera of Mozart's  Marriage of Figaro.  Rebecca Evans as Susanna sounded great and her acting moves from a distance looked marvellous. Next time I will take my binoculars.

The plot is a bit Brian Rix farcelike with people hiding in cupboards and under beds and disguising their identities but it all ends happily in the end. The main thrust (as  it were) is that the Count has recently decided to give up his traditional right to have his way with any serving girls in his household immediately before they are married. He finds himself reviewing that decision in the case of Susanna who is about to marry Figaro.

The music is quite good.

Turning out into the streets of Birmingham was bit of a shock to the system. Outdoor drinking in early March and lots of young people looking for the Saturday night ACTION. Not much like my time as a student in Birmingham in the 1960s!

We headed directly for the car and were safely tucked up in bed by midnight.
